Dr. Balsaris interests are focused on the development of pre-hospital care, emergency medicine and community-focused disaster mitigation methods in low-income settings.

His current projects include EMcounter, an online tool aimed at capturing the epidemiology of medical emergencies in India, project mumbaiVOICES, a web-based application that facilitates a citizen driven analysis of urban disaster response, and haitiVOICES  a partnership between UNICEF and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, where he serves as a Fellow. Along with colleagues at the Global EM Program, Dr. Balsari has conducted emergency medicine and disaster response trainings in Mumbai, Delhi, Sri Lanka, Montenegro, and Dubai. He has responded to humanitarian crises and disasters in Gujarat (India), Mississippi (Hurricane Katrina), and in Haiti after the recent earthquake.

Dr. Balsari is also fellow at the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights, where his work has focused on child rights issues including child labor in India, and child protection in Haiti.

Dr. Balsari is guest editor at SouthAsiaDisasters.net, a member of the Managing Committee of the Times Centre for Disaster Management at Mumbai University, and member of the National EMS Committee (Govt. of India) tasked to draft a national policy paper for EMS services across the country. He also serves as Fellow of the Asia Society.
